Dams and Irrigation Projects in Nigeria: The Paradox of Sustainable Development and Environmental Displacement

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Nigeria has invested heavily in dams and irrigation projects to promote economic growth, food security, and sustainable development. However, the environmental, social, and economic effectiveness of these projects is a subject of ongoing debate. This study examines the complex relationship between dams, irrigation projects, and sustainable development in Nigeria, using the Kainji and Shiroro dams as case studies. While these projects have supported irrigation and fishing, they have also led to flooding, displacement of local communities, and environmental degradation. The study highlights the need for effective maintenance, community engagement, environmental assessments, and institutional regulations to optimize the benefits of dams and irrigation projects. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of considering the social and environmental impacts of these projects on local communities. The research also explores the policy and institutional frameworks governing the development and management of dams and irrigation projects in Nigeria. The findings of this study have significant implications for sustainable economic development, environmental conservation, and social justice in Nigeria. Ultimately, this research aims to contribute to the development of more sustainable and equitable approaches to water management and irrigation development in Nigeria.
