Abstract: This research paper investigates the effectiveness of translation as a teaching tool in language classrooms, focusing on its impact on English as Second Language (ESL) learners. It evaluates translation's role in enhancing grammar comprehension, vocabulary retention, and cultural understanding, balanced against its potential drawbacks, such as slowing cognitive language processing and fostering dependence on the first language (L1). Using a mixed-methods research design, the study collected quantitative data from surveys and qualitative insights from interviews with 100 students and 20 teachers across diverse educational settings. Findings indicate that while 56% of students find translation helpful, 32% report slowed thinking. Translation proved most beneficial for grammar, writing, and listening skills but less effective for pronunciation. The study supports integrating translation selectively within Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) frameworks to optimize comprehension without sacrificing fluency. Recommendations include transitioning from bilingual support to English-only tasks through contextualized translation activities and incorporating AI-based translation technologies for vocabulary acquisition. Future research should investigate the long-term effects of translation methods and AI tools in multilingual ESL environments. The study concludes that translation, when strategically used, remains a valuable supplementary tool for fostering language proficiency.
