Achieving high strength and elevated Young's modulus in Mg-Li matrix composites via interface tailoring through heat treatment

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The challenge of low elastic modulus in Mg alloys has consistently hindered their research and application. This study presents an innovative Mg-8Li-3Al-2Zn-0.5Y (LAZ832) alloy matrix composite , enhanced by micron TiB 2 , achieving an integration of superior strength , low density, and elevated Young's modulus . Fabricated via vacuum stir-casting and subjected to solid solution heat treatment, the resulting Mg-Li matrix composites exhibit remarkable microstructural homogeneity and superior mechanical properties. The as-quenched LAZ832 composite exhibits a reduced density of 1.65 g/cm 3 , with compressive yield strength (CYS) of 360 MPa and demonstrating the 60 GPa Young's modulus. The inclusion of micron TiB 2 particles significantly contributes to the high modulus. Additionally, solid solution treatment reduces the softening precipitate phase on the TiB 2 interface, enhancing the strengthening effect . This research offers significant potential for the development and production of ultra-lightweight, high-modulus materials.
