Urinary Ammonium: A Potential Novel Biomarker for Diarrhea Severity in Patients With Ulcerative Colitis
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Almost 3 million outpatient visits to gastroenterology clinics are prompted by diarrhea as the chief complaint, yet evaluating its severity remains inherently subjective.1 Self-reported symptoms often fail to accurately quantify diarrheal losses due to factors such as bowel frequency, urgency, and incomplete evacuation.2,3 Objective biomarkers offer a standardized, reproducible measure that reduces reliance on subjective self-reports like stool frequency, minimizing recall bias and variability in clinical assessment.
