Prevalence of catheter associated urinary tract infections in a tertiary care hospital: 3-year study

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background and Objectives: Healthcare associated infections (HAI) are responsible for increased mortality, morbidity, emotional and financial burden in hospitalized patients. Catheter -associated urinary tract Infections (CAUTI) is a leading infection in healthcare settings. This study aims to know the prevalence of CAUTI and its microbiological profile along with risk factors associated with it. It will help to plan policies for preventive measure to reduce CAUTI. Material and Methods: This is a retrospective observational study conducted over a period of 3yrs duration (2021-2023) in a tertiary care teaching hospital. Urine samples were collected with proper aseptic precautions from CAUTI suspected patients and processed. Identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of the isolated pathogens was done as per CLSI guidelines. Results: In this study, the CAUTI rate was 0.51 per 1000 urinary catheter days. It was predominantly reported in 20-40 years age group and affected equally to females & males. Pseudomonas aeruginosa being the commonest pathogen. The highest incidence was reported in the 1st week of urinary catheterization. Conclusion: This study provides baseline data on CAUTI rate, pathogens isolated and risk factors at our institute. This will help in scheduling training and formulating antibiotic policy to reduce the rate of CAUTI.
