Second Correction to “Size-Resolved Elemental Composition of Respiratory Particles in Three Healthy Subjects”
Year: 2025
Type: erratum
Abstract: InformationT his correction affects the number of particles analyzed and corresponding statistics reported throughout the original paper, but it does not affect the main conclusions of the paper. We have updated text, tables, and figures that were affected here and in the Supporting Information. In response to a comment by Hill and Doughty 1 and our rebuttal, 2 we reviewed and reanalyzed data that had been collected using computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (CCSEM/EDX).Specifically, we manually examined all SEM images and excluded data for individual particles that were not clearly resolved using automated thresholding.Additionally, we excluded particles with diameters less than 0.1 μm from analysis due to uncertainties in the measured elemental fractions. This process removed more than half of the particles originally reported. In the updated analysis, the revised numbers of particles are 3180, 3357, and 6864 for subjects A, B, and C, respectively. We further confirmed the organic content of particles by new analyses using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM).The results of the STXM analysis appear in the Supporting Information.
