Efectiveness Duolingo And Hello Talk Apps In Increasing Students Confidence And Motivation In Speaking Skills

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Speaking skill is one of the important aspects in Indonesian language learning, which aims to train students to communicate effectively and efficiently. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Duolingo and Hello Talk apps in increasing students' confidence and motivation in English speaking skills. Using a paired samples design, the study involved 20 respondents who were treated using both apps separately. The analysis showed that students' mean score on Duolingo (7533.3) was higher than Hello Talk (6966.7), with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.001) and a moderate to large effect size (Cohen's d = 0.789). The moderately strong positive correlation (r = 0.660) between the results of the two apps indicates that they support each other in the learning process. However, the results on Hello Talk showed higher variability, making it less consistent than Duolingo. Based on the N-Gain analysis, an average positive increase of 9.995 was found, although there were some students who experienced a decrease in results. This study concludes that Duolingo provides more stable results, while Hello Talk has potential as a social interaction-based learning tool. Further research is recommended to integrate the two apps as a hybrid learning model aimed at developing speaking skills.
