Abstract: The article’s main topic is matter of memory, confession and autobiography in Confessions of a Mask by Yukio Mishima and Sans soleil by Chris Marker. Starting with close analysis of opening scenes from both the book and the film, the paper highlights metaphor of a mask found in discussed works. Mask is a tool of distancing and creation for an autobiographer. Mishima’s and Marker’s search for their identity’s essence in memories ends paradoxically—truly essential is lack of essence.
