Abstract: Aim: The paper describes the beginnings of the use of dogs in law enforcement and criminal investigation in Hungary, which developed in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy mainly from the private interest of gendarmerie and police officers. Methodology: The present study is based on the literature on the subject, contemporary news reports and analysis, primarily using the methodological tools of legal history research. Findings: Hungarian gendarmes and police officers in several places in the country, at first completely independently of each other, began to deal with the law enforcement and criminalistics possibilities of dogs, based on German and Austrian models, which was already on the verge of institutionalization immediately before the First World War and was only prevented by the First World War. Value: The number of researches and findings on the law enforcement and criminalistics activities of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy is negligible, so any information on the subject will enrich our knowledge of the period.
