Abstract: This document presents the design and development of a web-based Academic Advising App, aimed at optimizing university course scheduling and academic planning.The project seeks to address inefficiencies in traditional advising systems by providing a comprehensive solution for administrators, enabling streamlined course catalog management, conflict prevention, and overall process improvement.Universities often face challenges with outdated or fragmented advising tools, which can lead to scheduling conflicts, increased administrative burden, and limited accessibility for both students and faculty.Our application leverages modern web development technologies to create an intuitive and scalable platform that enhances these processes.The front end is developed using React.js,providing a dynamic and responsive user interface, while the backend is built with Django, ensuring robust data handling and security.MySQL serves as the database management system, offering reliable, structured storage for course data.Throughout the development, we incorporated regulatory considerations, particularly compliance with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), to ensure the secure handling of student information.A structured research approach guided the project, including an evaluation of existing university advising tools, such as DegreeWorks, to identify gaps and areas for enhancement.The app is designed to provide administrators with tools for academic calendar planning, course catalog organization, and past scheduling review to prevent conflicts and reduce manual workload.Future iterations may introduce functionalities for academic advisers, including scheduling office hours, managing advising appointments, and facilitating direct communication with students through virtual meetings and messaging features.Key evaluation metrics for the app include accuracy, efficiency, data access speed, system reliability, cross-platform compatibility, and adoption rates among administrators.By centralizing academic planning and ensuring regulatory compliance, the Academic Advising App enhances efficiency while laying the groundwork for future student and advisor integration.With continued development and adoption, this application has the potential to become a core tool for academic institutions, modernizing the advising process and improving institutional efficiency.
