Invisible barriers: the educational and social exclusion of children with chronic diseases in Denmark
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This qualitative study explores the participation conditions of children with chronic diseases within the Danish school system. The research draws on interviews with 10 parents and two school professionals, focusing on six boys and four girls aged 8–18, primarily in primary school, with one in high school. Similar to students with learning and developmental disorders, students with chronic diseases have special needs linked to their conditions. Therefor it is argued that children with chronic diseases should receive similar attention in school. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the needs and circumstances of these children, highlighting key issues related to accessibility, inclusion, and the adequacy of educational support. Our findings reveal significant educational challenges, placing children with chronic conditions at high risk of exclusion. The study underscores the urgent need for comprehensive educational reforms to ensure the full inclusion and support of children with chronic diseases in mainstream education.
