Usability Evaluation of the Wheelchair-Mounted Sonic Vibration Exercise Device for Students with Severe Physical Disabilities

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a wheelchair-mounted sonic vibration exercise device to improve physical function and accessibility for students with severe physical disabilities. The device was designed to enable safe and effective exercise without requiring users to transfer from their wheelchairs, address accessibility challenges and promote independent living. The device uses precisely controlled vertical sonic vibrations to stimulate joints, muscles, and the circulatory system safely. It features a ramp, safety bar, footrest, sonic vibration platform, remote control, and a built-in scale. The usability of the device was evaluated with 74 participants (students with severe physical disabilities and their caregivers) across welfare centers and special education schools.A satisfaction survey with 10 items assessed safety, ease of use, noise level, product size, and effectiveness. The evaluation showed high user satisfaction, with an overall score of 47.5 out of 50.Participants reported high satisfaction with the device's effectiveness, operation time, and low noise levels (scoring above 4.8 out of 5).However, feedback indicated improvements in the control interface and product size are needed. The findings suggest that the device effectively supports physical rehabilitation and can improve the quality of life for wheelchair users.
