SAT-144 Microvascular and macrovascular complication in patients with young and late onset type 2 diabetes mellitus

Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: S.B. Yadav: None. A. Singhal: None. Background and aims: Prevalence of young onset type 2 DM, was dramatically increasing. Earlier age at onset of T2DM is of great concern since it translates to a greater duration of exposure to hyperglycaemia and/or represent an inherently more aggressive metabolic phenotype with rapid onset of beta cell failure and insulin resistance and associated with consequent development of chronic vascular complications of diabetes during the mostproductive years of an individual’s life. Aim of study to see difference between micro and macrovascular complication of young and late onset type 2 diabetes mellitus. Materials and methods: A cross sectional study was conducted at our tertiary care centre for assessing the prevalence of both microvascular and macrovascular complications in young and late onset type 2 diabetes in patients with age of onset less than 40 and more than 40 years respectively. Results: A total of 246 patients are recruited, 123 in each group. Mean age of young onset diabetes and late onset diabetes patients were 46.2 and 57.6 years respectively. BMI, waist circumference and presence of dyslipidaemia was comparable in both the groups. Family history of diabetes was present in 81.3 % of young onset and 55.3 % of late onset diabetes (p value<0.01). Young onset diabetes patients have higher HbA1c at presentation than late onset ones (p<0.01). Among microvascular complications, neuropathy was more in late onset diabetes (p<0.05) and retinopathy and nephropathy prevalence was almost similar (p value 0.3 and 0.7 respectively) in both the groups. Among macrovascular complications cardiovascular disease were more in late onset diabetes (p value=0.05), however prevalence for cerebrovascular disease and peripheral vascular disease (p value 0.52 and 0.3 respectively) was similar in both the groups. Conclusion: In our study except for neuropathy and CAD which was more prevalent in late onset group, all other complications were similar in both the groups. Saturday, June 1, 2024
