Confirmation Bias in Task-based Information Search: an eye-tracking study in health-related context

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Confirmation bias, the tendency to seek and interpret evidence that supports one's prior beliefs, has been a focus of research in Interactive Information Retrieval (IIR).However, there is a lack of research that systematically examines how search tasks influence the manifestation of confirmation bias within information search behavior, particularly in the context of health-related information retrieval. To address this issue, this research proposes an in-lab eye-tracking study in a health-related context. This study aims to provide a multidimensional analysis of the impact of task attributes on information-seeking behaviors influenced by confirmation bias in IIR.By integrating quantitative eye movement data with qualitative insights from interviews, the study provides insights into how different task attributes affect confirmation bias in information search. This research will inform future task design for confirmation bias research, enable the development of more intelligent search systems tailored to mitigate bias, and enhance user interaction by providing balanced and diverse viewpoints.
