C-35 | Weighing the Risks: Effects of BMI on Complications Following Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion with WATCHMAN FLX
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Obesity is linked to higher incidence of atrial fibrillation and ischemic stroke. While some evidence supports the use of novel oral anticoagulants in obese patients, current guidelines advise caution with a BMI >40 kg/m2 or weight >120 kg. Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) may provide an alternative for obese patients, particularly considering the obesity paradox, which suggests improved outcomes in this group (BMI 25-39.9 kg/m2). This study explores the under-studied relationship between BMI and complications following LAAO.
