Las condiciones de vulnerabilidad en las jóvenes de clases populares

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article aims to examine the socioeconomic and urban conditions in which young women from Pedregal de Santo Domingo live, and how these conditions place them in a state of both social and urban vulnerability. Through a sociological characterization of youth and the use of the concepts of vulnerability and gender, the article seeks to analyze the relations of inequality faced by young women from working-class backgrounds as they attempt to develop their life projects. The characterization of youth is based on a sociological approach that acknowledges the diversity of social, economic, and urban realities, as well as the specific conditions of age-related transitions. The concepts of vulnerability and urban vulnerability will serve to understand the structural risk conditions experienced by young women from popular sectors, which limit their agency and social development and expose them to contexts of insecurity and violence. Finally, we consider it essential to carry out this analysis from a gender perspective, which problematizes the role of gender norms in shaping the life trajectories of young women in the neighborhood.
