Abstract: THE President gave an update on BVA's most recent work around the Competition and Markets Authority investigation of the veterinary services market for household pets. She reported that the Association had responded to five working papers issued by the CMA and was expecting the publication of further papers shortly; it would be responding to these as well. The CMA's proposed remedies were also due to be published soon, she said. Noting that Martin Coleman, chair of the CMA investigation panel, had said the CMA would be using this opportunity ‘to test out some remedies’ and was expecting ‘serious pushback’ on some of them, she stressed that the paper was being published for consultation. It would not necessarily represent the remedies that would finally be imposed. She also noted that the CMA had slightly adjusted the administrative timetable for its investigation. While the statutory deadline was still expected to be the end of November, the decision-making deadline had been moved from June to July. This was expected to have little effect overall. Past president Malcolm Morley pointed out that the CMA had started using language that BVA had used in all its contributions to the investigation: ‘We should not underestimate the impact that BVA, and the divisions and the affiliates that have been working on this have had,’ he said, adding: ‘I think it has been really striking.’
