Impact of Cenosphere and Surgical Waste Needle as Filler Additives on Three-Body Abrasive Wear Behavior of Carbon-Glass Fabric-Reinforced Polyester Composites

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The proposed three-body abrasive wear performance of bi-directional carbon-glass fabric-reinforced polyester composites, with as well as without cenosphere and waste medical needle filler, has been investigated employing a dry sand/stainless steel wheel abrasion tester. Particles of angular silica sand with diameters between 200 and 250 µm have been utilized as loose and dry abrasives. The wear confronts were conducted at two distinct loads, 12 N and 24 N, with multiple abrading distances of 360, 720, 1080, 1440, and 1800 meters. For every composite, the wear volume rises with increasing load or sliding distance. According to the experimental wear data, sliding distance and applied force define wear abrasive of the composites. Inclusion of cenospheres and waste surgical needle filler in carbon-glass fiber-reinforced polyester (C-G-P) composites exhibited enhanced abrasive wear resistance at elevated filler concentrations. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to examine the morphology of the worn surface characteristics of composites and to elucidate the mechanisms involved in wear analysis.
