Biomechanical Energy Harvesting for Enhanced Battery Efficiency in Robotic Prosthetic Limbs
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The increasing adoption of robotics in assistive technologies calls for innovative energy management solutions to improve device autonomy and functionality. This paper explores the integration of biomechanical energy harvesting mechanisms in robotic prosthetic limbs to address the limitations of battery size, weight, and frequent recharging requirements. By harnessing inertial energy generated during human movement, an embedded energy harvesting device (EHD) was developed, utilizing a lightweight modular design. The system converts biomechanical forces into electrical energy using a magnet and coil-based structure. The prototype achieved a peak voltage of 1.2V during movement tests, demonstrating its potential to extend battery life and enhance the usability of prosthetic devices.
