The African Direction in UK's Public Diplomacy after Brexit

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The article analyses the main trends in the third dimension of British public diplomacy on the African continent. The focus of the work is on the analysis of various initiatives of the British Council, the Royal Society and the Chatham House think tank. The author turned to the materials of the High Education Statistical Agency, documents of the UK government and data from the British Council’s open sources. Three areas of London's activities were identified, which are being worked on within the framework of the public diplomacy’s third dimension: the educational sector, building a positive image of the United Kingdom in Africa and ecology. The systemic shortcomings of the Indo-Pacific bias of British foreign policy have been revealed, in which there is a flaw in the fundamental foundations of the concept itself. In particular, the geographical boundaries of the Indo-Pacific have not been fully worked out, not all countries of the continent are taken into account in the fundamental documents, and the extreme generalization of a number of announced plans for cooperation with some African countries is highlighted. There is also a continuation of the global trend in the demand for scientists from the field of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), who are the main recipients for grant support from the UK
