Effects of increasing doses of poultry droppings-based compost on soil chemical properties, plant-parasitic nematodes and maize (Zea mays) productivity in the south-central region of Burkina Faso

Type: article
Abstract: In Burkina Faso, maize production faces several constraints, including poor soils and attacks by plant-parasitic nematodes, which considerably limit its agronomic and economic performance. From a sustainable production perspective, it is necessary to find solutions that are also sustainable, economically efficient and less harmful to the environment and to human and animal health.Previous studies have shown that compost can restore soil fertility and reduce populations of plant-parasitic nematodes. It is in this context that the present study was conducted on the Kombous-Youngo site of 3MI, located in the Centre-South region, to assess the effectiveness of poultry-dung-based compost on the agronomic and economic performance of maize and on reducing plantparasitic nematode populations in maize crops. In a Completely Randomized Fisher Block design, 5 treatments (T1: 0 t/ha, T2: 2 t/ha, T3: 3 t/ha, T4: 4 t/ha and T5: 5 t/ha of compost) were used in 4 replicates.Compost application had a significant effect on all the parameters studied compared with the control, except for available potassium, organic carbon, organic matter, total nitrogen and the carbon/nitrogen ratio. These effects were generally proportional to the doses of compost applied.Based on the most Effects of increasing ….
