Aligning digital arch scans with cone beam computed tomography by using a chairside radiopaque occlusal registration material: A technique report and literature review

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT Accurate superimposition of digital intraoral scans onto cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images is crucial for static computer-assisted implant surgery (sCAIS). Conventionally, the remaining teeth are utilized as matching references to achieve this superimposition. However, in patients with limited dentition, the reduced number and uneven distribution of these teeth may compromise their reliability as reference points, often necessitating additional radiographic guides that increase both chairside time and treatment costs. This technical report introduces a straightforward and efficient method to enhance the alignment of digital arch scans with CBCT images in patients with insufficient remaining teeth, employing a chairside radiopaque occlusal registration material. By applying this material to edentulous regions, additional radiopaque markers with optimal distribution are generated, offering new reference points for precise scan data alignment. This technique can be seamlessly incorporated into routine clinical practice, as it utilizes only readily available clinical materials. In addition, a literature review of techniques for improving the alignment of arch scans and CBCT scans was conducted, aiming to provide guidance for clinical practice.
