Biochemical Analysis of Skin of Milkfish (Chanos chanos) as a Potential Treatment for Atopic Dermatitis

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Atopic dermatitis is a long-lasting or chronic disease and is a relevant disease everywhere, especially in tropical areas such as the Philippines. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, non-contagious disease that can be irritating and challenging to manage. Its severity and location influence treatment options, and adults are more prone to developing severe cases that can be difficult to cure. This study aims to determine the biochemical components of milkfish (Chanos chanos) skin, particularly its fatty acid content, as a potential treatment for atopic dermatitis. This research used a quantitative-descriptive research design: laboratory testing was performed with established procedures. The laboratory testing used the method of Gas Chromatography and Mojonnier Extraction to get the results from each Fatty Acids, which indicate that fatty acids are a key component of the Milkfish (Chanos chanos) skin, with Palmitic Acid present at the highest concentration, while Caprylic Acid and Tridecanoic Acid. Additionally, the skin of the Milkfish may have potential therapeutic use for treating atopic dermatitis, pending further research. The researcher suggests that patients are advised to consult healthcare professionals before adding milkfish skin to their skincare regimen, due to its potential benefits for atopic dermatitis. Initial research shows promise; however, safety and efficacy must be validated through further clinical trials. Patients should remain cautious and attentive to any adverse reactions that may arise.
