Economic Importance of Aquaculture in Spain Compared to Other European Countries: European Court of Auditors’ Report on Aquaculture in the EU
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Aquaculture is an economic activity aimed at producing and fattening aquatic organisms (animals and plants) in their environment. This activity includes the rearing of fish, molluscs, algae, and other aquatic organisms. It can be carried out in marine, brackish, or inland waters as well as in terrestrial installations equipped with water recirculation systems. The sustainable development of aquaculture (in environmental, economic, and social terms) is one of the main objectives of the EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Consequently, the EU has been providing financial resources through specific programs for aquaculture to producer countries.
