Participle in Copies of Privileges to the Kyiv City Magistrate

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The article characterizes the peculiarities of the use of adjectival and adverbial forms of participles in copies of privileges issued to the Kyiv City Magistrate. The written records was created in the first half of the 18th century for K. Krychevets' own needs. The texts of charters were copied and translated, and therefore they are characterized by linguistic features of the 16th–17th and 18th centuries. From the last period, we observe the penetration of a large number of features of the Old Slavonic language, in particular, adjectival forms of participle in -shchy, which were not characteristic of the previous period in business monuments. Wide use of active participles in -chi was noted. Passive forms in -n are widely represented: A characteristic feature in the writing of such forms is the two letters -nn-. The research material also features a small number of active participles with the formant -vsh- and passive participles with the suffix -m-, -t-. A small number of -l- was found among the analyzed forms. Several word forms are attested, which were formed from ancient bases: vzemshy, (having taken), dovedshy (having proved), prynemshy (having got), which were used in parallel with newer ones. Single verbs are combined with the reciprocal participle sya / se, which could be both prepositional and postpositional. Participial adverbs with various formative suffixes -uchi (-yuchi), -achi (-yachi), -shi, -vshi are also actively used in the note. The functioning of participial adverbs with –sya /-se, which is more often fixed after the adverb and written singly before it, was revealed in the analyzed text. After sibilants, along with the formant -en, the phonetic variant -on is used. A comparison of the analyzed forms with other records shows that in similar texts of the 16th and 17th centuries, active participial adjectives and adverbs were actively used and created according to the same models as in the presented convolute. At the syntactic level, the analyzed word forms of the participle act as uncommon and common meaning (adverbial inflection) and in the role of a predicate; the adverb functions both as a singular and as part of an inflection, acting as a circumstance.
