Abstract: When People Tell You Who They Are, Believe Them By Autumn A. ArnettY ou know that moment when someone says something wild, and you pause-just for a second-thinking, Surely, they didn't mean that the way it sounded. Then, months or years later, you find yourself nodding slowly, realizing, Oh.They meant exactly that. We've all been there. That colleague who made a little offhand joke about women being "too emotional" for leadership, only for you to later find out he actively lobbied against your promotion. That university president who, back in 2020, put out a very strongly worded statement about "commitment to diversity"-and then, when budget time rolled around, somehow couldn't scrape together a single dollar for DEI initiatives but miraculously found millions for a new stadium. That person you dated who casually mentioned that they "don't really believe in monogamy"-but, of course, they absolutely wanted to be in a committed relationship with you.(Bless your heart.)At some point, we have to stop pretending to be shocked when people do exactly what they said they were going to do.And yet, here we are.Again.
