Los onces de septiembre que marcaron la historia de la información

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The changes in power over information can be observed by comparing two "September elevenths" that have marked history: the coup d'état in Chile and the terrorist attack in the United States, which started the War on Terror. It is thus possible to identify similarities and differences in terms of the actors and ways of controlling information, as well as the risks to human rights, knowing that in the first era there was an transitional justice intended for recovering violated rights. Thus, using a dialectical approach, we seek to answer the following research problem: how can the network society reconcile the need to preserve the right to memory in a world marked by digital surveillance by the state and technology companies throughout history? The research shows that, inspired by transitional justice, it is necessary to guarantee the true memory of facts against disinformation, as well as to decentralize power over the control of digital records by strengthening independent institutions for document storage and fact-checking. In addition, it is necessary to fight the economic exploitation of informational disorder by demonetizing lies and promoting reparations for the damage caused by this situation.
