Personalized strategies for caries prevention in elderly patients with polymorbidity and polypharmacy
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: BACKGROUND. Increased life expectancy has led to a rise in the number of elderly patients with polymorbidity and polypharmacy. These factors contribute to the development of caries due to impaired salivation and mineral metabolism. Diseases such as diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular pathologies reduce the remineralization potential of enamel. Additionally, many medications (antihypertensive drugs, antidepressants, diuretics) cause xerostomia, creating favorable conditions for the growth of cariogenic microflora. Standard preventive approaches are not sufficiently effective, justifying the need for personalized strategies that consider individual health conditions and medication burden.
