Remediation of Seawater Contaminated by Crude Oil Using Modified Chitosan Derived from Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei)
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Objective: This study investigates the remediation of seawater contaminated with crude oil using modified chitosan, aiming to evaluate the adsorption efficiency of crosslinked chitosan and its effectiveness in crude oil removal. Theoretical Framework: The research is based on the increasing contamination of marine ecosystems by hydrocarbons, emphasizing the need for sustainable and efficient decontamination methods. Chitosan, a biopolymer derived from chitin, is highlighted for its promising adsorptive properties, particularly when crosslinked with Tripolyphosphate (TPP). Method: The study employs an applied, exploratory, and experimental approach. Different formulations of chitosan were characterized, and their adsorption performance was assessed under controlled conditions, using emulsions of seawater and crude oil at concentrations of 200, 500, and 1000 mg/L. Results and Discussion: Crosslinked chitosan demonstrated high efficiency in crude oil removal, with the gel bead form achieving up to 97.08% adsorption at 500 mg/L. The study also presents physicochemical properties, including molecular weight and degree of deacetylation, validating chitosan’s potential in environmental remediation. Research Implications: The findings support the application of crosslinked chitosan in crude oil decontamination, providing a sustainable alternative for marine pollution management. The results suggest further studies on its optimization and broader industrial applications. Originality/Value: This research contributes to the field by demonstrating the high efficiency of modified chitosan in oil spill remediation. Its practical implications extend to environmental sustainability, offering a biodegradable and effective solution for hydrocarbon-contaminated waters. This study aligns with SDG 6 by promoting clean water through crude oil removal and with SDG 7 by encouraging sustainable energy practices and responsible resource management.
