Effect of Commonly Used Beverages on the Color Stability of the Kedo E Max Pedo Shade Nanocomposite Material in Children: An In Vitro Study

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: discoloration at the surface and subsurface levels.6 Though various studies have investigated the discoloration of dental restorations due to prolonged exposure to beverages and mouthwashes, only a handful have focused on beverages consumed by children, while the majority have examined those consumed by adults.[5][6][7][8][9] There are no studies to date that have evaluated the color stability of the new Pedo shade nanocomposite material.Hence, the present study aimed at evaluating the effect of commonly consumed beverages by children on the color stability of the newer Pedo shade nanocomposite material for use in pediatric dental practice. IntroductIonThe rising demand for esthetics in dentistry has resulted in the evolution of a variety of esthetic restorative materials for clinical use.Composite resins are among the esthetic materials frequently used in pediatric dentistry. The main characteristic of any esthetic restorative material is that it should simulate the natural tooth color and translucency while also maintaining color stability for a long period in use. 1 Despite various improvements in the physical and chemical properties of resin-based composite filling materials, the color stability of the material still poses a challenge, as it is affected by various intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The composition and size of the filler particles, the quality of the polymer, and the synergist added to the photoinitiator system are common intrinsic factors that play a cardinal role in surface conditions, such as surface roughness, thus increasing the susceptibility of composite resin to staining.[2][3][4] The advancement in nanotechnology has resulted in the development of nanocomposites with filler sizes ranging from 0.01 to 0.04 mm.Nanocomposites have been reported to have enhanced physical and mechanical properties due to the smaller diameter of the nano-fillers.5 One such nanocomposite is the Kedo E Max Pedo shade nanocomposite, available in Pedo shade for esthetic restoration of primary anteriors.Another common extrinsic cause of staining in esthetic restorative materials is the consumption of various foods and drinks. In the oral cavity, staining agents from foods and beverages can penetrate the superficial layer of composite resins, causing 1,
