Transforming Female Education in Sub-Saharan Africa: Addressing Socio-Cultural, Economic, Institutional and Instructional Barriers to Access and Inclusion

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The phrase “educate a girl, you educate a nation” highlights the powerful impact of girls’ education on society. This literature review examines the socio-cultural and economic barriers that limit girls’ access to and inclusion in education in Sub-Saharan Africa. Drawing on peer-reviewed studies and international reports, the review explores how these barriers interact and affect girls in different ways, especially those from marginalized backgrounds. It uses liberal and intersectional feminist perspectives to explain how unequal social structures and power relations contribute to the exclusion of girls from education. The review identifies key barriers such as harmful gender norms, early marriage, poverty, child labour, and health-related challenges, and explains how these factors limit girls’ educational opportunities. It also offers practical recommendations for gender-responsive and inclusive strategies that address both individual and structural barriers to education. The review emphasizes the need for stronger and coordinated action by governments, communities, and global partners, and argues that investing in girls’ education is essential for building fairer, healthier, and more prosperous societies.
