Evaluation of the Efficacy of Oushadhi Tooth Powder Using Microbes Isolated From Dental Plaque and its Implications in Geriatric Patients

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The oral cavity is home to diverse microbial species with extrinsic and intrinsic factors which can lead to biofilm formation and subsequent plaque build-up with caries evolution. Prevention strategies need to be studied along with a focus on herbal ingredients and their efficacy in preventing dental plaque. The mouth microflora is essentially normal microflora playing an important role in host defence by acting as a natural barrier to pathogens. Some microorganisms are opportunistic pathogens and can cause transient bacteraemia as well as pyogenic infections. Hence it is imperative to study the efficacy of tooth powder in preventing bacterial adhesion using models simulating biofilm formation in an oral environment. Also antimicrobial sensitivity tests are performed to evaluate the efficacy of ingredients present in toothpowder which can be used to develop better oral healthcare products like herbal toothpastes, mouthwashes and gargles for overall oral healthcare. Improper oral health maintenance can lead to tooth and gum disease. When left untreated, dental disease can make chronic health conditions such as heart ailments, arthritis and diabetes worse. Maintaining oral health in the old and elderly presents its own unique challenges. An effective herbal product can help patients take an enthusiastic role and be motivated to care for their oral health holistically.
