The translator on loudspeaker: expanding the notion of the translator’s differential voice
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article proposes that Theo Hermans’s concept of the translator’s differential voice may be expanded into other avenues and contexts. It brings his theorizations on voice into dialogue with the theory of translation that Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak has developed across her career. Its findings suggest that making the translator’s differential voice more audible can concurrently amplify the author’s voice. As evidence, applied examples from my unpublished translation of Mónica Ojeda’s polyphonic La desfiguración Silva [“The Silva Disfigurement”] are provided. It is proposed that the translator should enhance the audibility of her differential voice when the literary text undergoing translation exhibits a feminist prizing of multivoicedness.
