One-year mortality and clinical outcome of chemical hip neurolysis in inoperable fragility hip fractures: A retrospective cohort study

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background: Chemical neurolysis has emerged as an alternative treatment modality for inoperable fragility hip fracture patients. This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate on the clinical outcomes as compared to conservative management. Methods: Fragility hip fracture patients receiving neurolysis in a regional cluster from 2015 to 2019 were included. One-year mortality was compared with the patients receiving conservative treatment from 2010 to 2014, when neurolysis was not a regular option. Clinical outcomes and risk factors were investigated. Results: One hundred twenty-three patients in the neurolysis group and 103 patients in the conservative group were included. There was no significant difference ( p = 0.8) in one-year mortality. One-year mortality was higher in chronic kidney disease and lower in intracapsular fracture patients. Conclusion: Chemical hip neurolysis was not inferior to conservative management in terms of one-year mortality. Intracapsular hip fracture and renal impairment were identified as protective and risk factors respectively. Further studies may help evaluate the functional outcome of neurolysis.
