Representation is Enough: Notes on the Black Box Bed

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: With this new essay we continue our reflection on the bed, its history and its present predicament. To rethink domestic space today is to recognize its entanglement with processes of blackboxing—the concealment of a system’s internal mechanisms, rendering its operations autonomous and opaque. As Aristide Antonas asserts in Representation is Enough: Notes on the Black Box Bed, domestic architecture, once conceived as a container for lived experience, is redefined as a framework for mediated existence. The home, no longer a passive backdrop, has transformed into an apparatus of mediation, its surfaces, screens, and interfaces absorbing and structuring the rhythms of digital circulation. In this context, the bed—perhaps the most frequently used piece of furniture within the household—is both a stage and an instrument, anchoring a mode of inhabitation shaped by endless scrolling, streaming, and projection. The bed no longer merely serves acts of withdrawal, but functions as a device that places the occupant within a networked field of engagement. The bed’s role is not passive but constitutive—an essential mechanism through which blackboxed operations structure life at its most intimate scale. To capture the bed’s evolving role today is to confront the reconfiguration of the domestic interior itself—defined not by presence, but by projection.
