Group Interventions with Caregivers of Older Adults: an Integrative Review

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Objective: To identify and analyze articles that present group interventions with caregivers of older adults, evaluating the main effects of the interventions on caregiver health. Theoretical Framework: In the Brazilian context, caregiving is typically undertaken by family members, especially women, often without adequate preparation to meet these demands. The physical, social, and emotional impacts reinforce the need for targeted interventions aimed at improving caregivers’ well-being and quality of life, focusing on support, emotional care, and guidance to enhance overall health. Method: This is an integrative review, an exploratory study that allows for a comprehensive overview of group interventions with caregivers of elderly individuals. Studies published between 2017 and 2022 on the topic were reviewed. Results and Discussion: Ten studies were selected that reported positive impacts of group interventions with caregivers of older adults in different contexts, such as reduced caregiver burden, improved mood, increased social support, and decreased stress. Research Implications: The practical and theoretical implications of this research are discussed, providing insights on how the findings can be applied to promote better quality of life for caregivers, highlighting the benefits of group-based approaches. These implications may apply to both public and private sectors in the pursuit of enhanced caregiver well-being. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by emphasizing the importance of group interventions with caregivers and highlighting results found in research conducted across different cultures.
