Type: article
Abstract: The literary research of traditional medicine in palm-leaf manuscripts holds significant value across multiple dimensions, as these ancient texts often preserve unique and authentic knowledge passed down through generation to generation. Palm-leaf manuscripts are repositories of indigenous wisdom, representing the intellectual heritage of ancient civilizations. They often contain detailed descriptions of medicinal plants, formulations and healing practices that were meticulously documented by the traditional practitioners. These manuscripts serve as historical records of medical systems such as Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and other traditional health systems. Siddha medicine, one of the oldest systems of Indian traditional codified system of medicine, has long been revered for its holistic approach to health, blending the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of individuals. At the core of this system lies an enormous amount of texts, often referred to as Siddha literature, which serves as a treasure trove of invaluable knowledge passed down through generation to generation orally through Guru-Shishya tradition. These texts mainly written in Tamil, offer profound insights into various aspects of life and healthcare, embodying the principles of alchemy, pharmacology and spirituality. Siddha literature is not just a repository of therapeutic knowledge but also a source of spiritual guidance. It underscores the importance of maintaining a balance between body and mind, emphasizing practices such as yoga, meditation and mantra to complement the treatment process. Many traditional Siddha remedies documented in palm-leaf manuscripts have the potential to be sources of new pharmaceuticals. The Siddha medicine, as documented in these manuscripts, often emphasizes the use of locally available, sustainable resources for treatment of various ailments. They document the proper usage of medicinal plants and natural resources, encouraging their preservation and sustainable use. The remedies and practices documented in these manuscripts often provide cost-effective and accessible healthcare options. These ancient manuscripts offer holistic approaches to health for treating the chronic and lifestyle disorders through integrated approaches for obtaining appropriate benefits, especially in chronic or lifestyle-related diseases. Many Siddha formulations documented in the classical literatures remain unexplored or unknown to the scientific community. Literary research provides access to these hidden treasures. In some cases, these manuscripts serve as the only surviving documentation of extinct or endangered medical practices. Interdisciplinary studies involving ethnobotany, pharmacology and anthropology enrich the understanding and application of traditional medicine. This kind of literary research bridges the gap between ancient knowledge and modern science by enabling the validation of traditional practices through laboratory studies and clinical trials. These kind of research can help governments to formulate policies for integrating traditional Siddha medicine into public healthcare systems. Besides many applications, there are many challenges lies in literary research which includes critical preservation of fragile palm-leaf manuscripts that are prone to deterioration, misinterpretation of texts due to linguistic or cultural gaps leading to inaccuracies and variability in standardization of traditional formulations and practices for modern applications. Thus, performing research on palm-leaf manuscripts in traditional medicine is a crucial endeavour for preserving cultural heritage and to foster sustainable healthcare solutions through value additions by involving modern medicine to serve the general public. To achieve this, the palm-leaf manuscripts need to be digitized to preserve this ancient treasure followed by decipherment and annotation of these classical texts. By documenting, validating and integrating this ancient wisdom responsibly, we can ensure its relevance and benefit to the future generations. Currently, Central Council for Research in Siddha is involved in this kind of literary research activities to showcase the strength of Siddha system of medicine for global acceptance. With increasing interest in alternative medicine, the revival and study of these palm leaf manuscripts and texts are crucial for expanding the horizons of Siddha medicine in contemporary healthcare practices. This treasure trove of wisdom holds the key to a healthier and more harmonious future. Financial support and sponsorhip Nil. Conflicts of interest There are no conflicts of intrerest.
