Abstract: The mechanical characteristics of closed-cell gradient foam aluminum under high strain rates were investigated. An enhanced direct impact Hopkinson pressure bar (DIHB) was employed to examine the impact response of cylindrical closed-cell foam aluminum specimens across a broad spectrum of strain rates, with the peak strain rate reaching 1300s−1. The dynamic deformation process was documented using a high-speed camera and analyzed via the digital image correlation (DIC) technique. The full-field strain evolution and distribution of the gradient foam aluminum during compression were acquired, and its deformation process, energy absorption mechanism, and damage mode were explored. The internal microstructure of the samples was inspected by X-ray micro-computed tomography (X-CT). Based on the experimental findings, the failure mechanism of the foam aluminum and the specific locations of internal structural damage were analyzed. The results indicate that the deformation behavior of foam aluminum is highly dependent on the loading rate. At elevated strain rates, the plateau stress rises, and alterations occur in the formation and propagation of the deformation front.
