Exploring the Link Between Identity Crisis and Radicalisation Among Youth in the Nanyamba Council

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper examines the role of identity crisis as a contributing factor to youth radicalisation and recruitment into terrorist groups, focusing on the Nanyamba Council in the Mtwara Region, Tanzania. The study aims to explore how a lack of self-definition, belonging, and purpose among youth increases their vulnerability to extremist narratives. A qualitative case study design was employed, using interviews and focus group discussions with youth, community leaders, and security personnel. Thematic analysis revealed that marginalised identity, perceived social exclusion, and weak integration into national or community narratives significantly influenced youth susceptibility to terrorist recruitment. These findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge on radicalisation by emphasising the psychological and social dimensions of vulnerability. This paper recommends the development of community-based identity support programs and inclusive national engagement frameworks as tools for preventing youth radicalisation.
