What can studies of the pair-distribution functions (PDF) contribute to our knowledge about UO2?

Abstract: Uranium dioxide has been studied for 70 years but still has some poorly understood properties. We present our last results using neutron total-scattering methods that evidence local deviations from average structure in UO2 Pair-Distribution Function (PDF). At high temperature, this deviation appears as a decreasing of the UO distance with temperature, which we interpret as a phonon-induced dynamic distortion of uranium’s local environment. At low temperature, this deviation takes place in UO2 magnetic order above the magnetic transition, which is still under study. Graphical abstract
