The Impact of Banditry-Related Trauma on Secondary School Students' Academic Performance in Kebbi State

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study investigated the impact of banditry-related trauma on the academic performance of secondary school students within the Danko Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, predicated on the understanding that a secure and peaceful school environment is crucial for educational attainment. Employing a descriptive survey research design, data were gathered from 357 students and 36 principals and teachers across nine sampled secondary schools. Key findings from the study's hypothesis testing revealed a significant negative correlation between students' mental health severity and their academic performance, as well as a significant negative difference in academic performance between students with low versus high levels of trauma/PTSD. These results underscore that students' psychological stability, beyond intelligence and teacher effectiveness, plays a vital role in their academic outcomes. The study concludes that psychological distress stemming from banditry significantly hinders academic performance and recommends the establishment of counselling and mental health support services in schools, alongside training for teachers to identify and address students' mental health needs effectively.
