The Role of Digital Media in Creating Awareness About Sustainable Menstrual Hygiene Practices

Abstract: Aim:This study investigates the role of digital media in creating awareness about sustainable menstrual hygiene practices among schoolgirls, and how various dimensions of digital‑media exposure influence the adoption of sustainable menstrual products and practices. Method:A cross‑sectional survey was administered to N = 380 adolescent girls (classes 8th–12th) using a structured questionnaire measuring: daily hours of digital‑media use; preferred platforms; frequency of encountering and engaging with hygiene‑related content; perceived reliability and effectiveness; and self‑reported changes in menstrual‑hygiene practices. Data were analysed in SPSS using cross‑tabulations and Pearson chi‑square tests to assess associations between exposure variables and (a) awareness indicators (engagement, perceived effectiveness), and (b) behavioural outcomes (practice changes). Discussion:We found that girls who spent more time on digital media were more likely to read and trust information about menstrual hygiene. However, only clear, step-by-step guides (like “how-to” tutorials) actually made them change their habits, just seeing posts or having easy access was not enough. Therefore, to help girls adopt sustainable menstrual products and practices, digital campaigns should give regular reminders or do fun challenges and give them simple, hands-on instructions they can follow easily. Conclusion:Sustained exposure time and targeted, actionable content emerge as the primary drivers of both awareness and adoption. Digital‑health campaigns should therefore prioritize strategies that increase continuous media use (e.g., interactive updates, reminders) and focus on practical, hands‑on guides to encourage real‑world uptake of sustainable menstrual‑hygiene practices.
