Abstract: The railway network of Hungary is very dense also in international comparison: as the total length of the network is 7,395 km, the aereal density is 8.00 km/100 km2, which is the sixth densest in the world. However, in other parameters it is far behind other countries as, for example, the railway electrification of Switzerland is 100% while of Hungary it is only 42.6%. In this study I investigated how the maximal possible value of freight traffic increases if not only the electrified but also the unelectrified lines are taken into account. This parameter is not only a good tool to quantify which railway lines should be electrified, but also to show how important the diesel engines for the country are.
