Abstract: In Hungary, an average of 1,700 outdoor waste-related fires occur annually. The aim of the present study is to examine these fires at national level and draw the appropriate conclusions. The authors of this study seek to answer the question of what trends can be identified regarding the spatial and temporal distribution of fires. Whether recurring factors can be identified and possible ways to reduce them. How many illegal waste dumps are there in the country and what are the causes? The annual number of fires in landfill sites and the landfills most affected by outdoor fires will also be identified. Analytical work is presented through statistical figures, charts and GIS models.
