Optimizing adhesion in aluminum alloys: A cross-disciplinary approach to surface treatment and bond strength
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Amidst the increasing adoption of aluminum structures for their lightweight and emission-reducing benefits in various industries, this study delves into optimizing aluminum bonding technologies via an in-depth analysis of surface treatments. We meticulously evaluated fourteen surface preparation techniques on aluminum sheet and L-section joints to discern their impact on surface wetting, topography, and roughness. Employing a flexible polyurethane adhesive for structural bonding, our research rigorously assessed the joint strength through tensile and shear stress tests. Additionally, we investigated the temporal stability of surface activation post-treatment. Our findings aim to establish a nuanced correlation between micro-roughness profiles, surface activation states, and the efficacy of adhesive bonds, contributing to the refinement of aluminum bonding processes in high-demand applications.
