The Assessment of Chromatic Properties via Color-Difference Formulae in Aqueous-Based Dyeing and Non-Aqueous Reverse Micellar Dyeing of Woven Wool Fabrics Using α-Bromoacrylamide Based Lanasol Dyes

Type: article
Abstract: The study investigated the chromatic characteristics of wool fabrics dyed with poly(ethylene glycol)-based reverse-micellar dyes in octane, juxtaposing these findings with those obtained from an aqueous dyeing method. Both dyeing techniques exhibited consistent reflectance and calibration curves, characterized by high linearity. Notably, the calibration curves derived from water-based dyeing displayed a marginally greater linearity compared to those from reverse-micellar dyeing. The color intensity, quantified through K/Ssum values, was generally superior in the samples dyed with octane compared to those dyed with water across various dye concentrations. The predicted dye concentrations, calculated using color difference formulas, closely aligned with theoretical predictions for both dyeing methodologies. This indicates that octane-assisted dyeing using PEG-typed reverse micelle can yield color outcomes comparable to those achieved through traditional aqueous dyeing. Furthermore, the octane-dyed wool fabrics exhibited good to excellent levelness, as evidenced by relative unlevelness indices (RUI), in contrast to water-dyed samples. Both aqueous and octane-assisted dyed wool fabrics demonstrate enhanced color fastness in dry crocking conditions compared to wet crocking scenarios.
