Creationist Museums in Latin America: New Venues, Old Formats

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This is an accepted article with a DOI pre-assigned that is not yet published. This essay presents an overview of creationist museums in Ibero-America, namely the Seventh-Day Adventist premises that display the evidence of God’s design and the objects that are used as evidence of the contemporaneity of humans and dinosaurs. The first part sketches the global distribution of creation museums, including the recent venues inaugurated on the continent and connected with the Adventist Church and Brazilian Creationist Society. In the second part, by tackling the figurines of Acámbaro and the Ica stones, the paper discusses how commercialization and entertainment intersects with politics and faith, particularly looking at the coming into being of those “hoaxes” that emerged in the parasciences from the 1970s and that are being repurposed for an evangelical audience.
