Biotope-based Approach for The Ecological Management of Coronon Watershed in Davao del Sur, Philippines

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This study assesses the ecological structure of the 1646.15-hectare Coronon Watershed in Davao Del Sur, Philippines, and develops an Ecological Plan addressing water pollution, deforestation, and biodiversity loss while integrating local economic needs. Biotope mapping identified 21 biotopes, assessed using four criteria: Period of Development (D), Area (A), Rarity (R), and Habitat (H). Open forests, representing the remaining virgin forests of Mount Apo, covered 11.32% of the site and were classified as Ecological Cores due to their high ecological value. Dominant biotopes included Brushlands (24.75%), Cultivated Areas (25.96%), and Plantations (34.74%), while Built-up Areas had the lowest ecological value (3.23%). Coastal biotopes were Ecological Edges, while rivers and streams formed Ecological Corridors. Management strategies included strict conservation for Open Forests, sustainable farming for Cultivated Areas and Plantations, and native vegetation for coastal protection. Riverbanks were proposed as forested nature trails to support wildlife movement. Collaboration among local government agencies was recommended to create an interconnected ecotourism park system, ensuring sustainable development while preserving the watershed’s ecological integrity.
