Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background: The rising rates of marijuana consumption have sparked concerns regarding its possible effects on cardiovascular health. Objective: The study explored the association between marijuana smoking and cardiovascular health in a Nigerian population by analyzing serum lipid profiles and cardiac enzyme levels. Methods: Cross-sectional research, including 60 marijuana users and 60 nonusers was conducted. Data on participants’ sociodemographic characteristics, duration, and amount of marijuana use were gathered through structured questionnaires. Serum levels of creatine kinase (CK), cholesterol, triglycerides (Trig), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc), and aspartate transaminase (AST) were analyzed using a spectrophotometric method. Results: Marijuana users showed significantly elevated levels of CK, cholesterol, Trig, and AST compared to nonusers ( P < 0.05). There were no discernible variations in HDLc and LDLc values. In addition, marijuana users had a significantly higher plasma atherogenic index ( P < 0.05). Conclusions: Smoking marijuana may pose a risk for the early onset of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and related cardiac events among Nigerians. It is recommended that public health initiatives be implemented to raise awareness about the cardiovascular risks linked to marijuana use and to encourage regular cardiovascular monitoring for users. Healthcare professionals should recognize these risks and integrate cardiovascular evaluations into the standard care for individuals with a history of marijuana consumption.
