Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Adolescence is a critical developmental period characterized by significant physical, emotional, and social changes. Mental health during this stage is pivotal for overall well-being and future outcomes. Globally, mental health disorders are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among adolescents. In India, with the largest adolescent population worldwide, addressing mental health challenges is both urgent and complex. This paper explores the prevalence, risk factors, common mental health issues, the role of family and society, interventions, and policy frameworks related to adolescent mental health in India. It uses a qualitative review of existing literature, secondary data, and policy documents to propose recommendations for a multi-sectoral, culturally sensitive approach to improving adolescent mental health.
